My First Professional Work

Thu Jun 26, 2008, 12:48 PM
I just found out my very first professional comics work was reprinted in Marvel's Genext #2.

Back while I was at the Art Institute of Dallas back in 1992, I was showing off my portfolio to editors at the Dallas Fantasy Fair comic book conventions.
This was back in the day when Marvel and DC were at conventions all over the country and comics were HUGE!
So, I showed my portfolio to Marvel editor, Renee Witterstaetter. She was editing their humor comic "What The--?!" and I had humor/gag type material in my portfolio.
She said she'd buy an X-Men gag from me to run in the comic. So I sent in several ideas and she picked 2 which became a feature called "Mutant Mishaps".

That piece ran on the back cover of "What The--?!" #21. It was a part of my graduation portfolio.

I was 21 years old and so excited to have my first piece published at Marvel. I then went on to do some work for several indie companies that popped up during that time in comics. And then landed a job at Extreme Studios at Image Comics which led to my DC and Marvel gigs.

But if you want to see where it all began, check out Genext #2. If I can dig up the original comic or if i still have the original art, I'll scan and post it!

Awesome! You know, weird small world. I know Renee (or used to) I worked with her when she started doing work in film.

There are two types of people in the world.
-Those who can't draw.
-And those who won't accept they can't draw and then draw.
How do you look at it? Like does it just blow your mind to see how you changed style and talent wise? Or does it just give you douche chills?

Art is completely subjective. Your appearance is not, so clean it up a little before you come back here again.
yeah bub... please do!!! i'd love to see them

i was 3 in 1992 =3...and it would be another 3 years until I got my hands on a marvel comic or anything X-men like haha...

But i'd love to see it but if you can't scan it in I'll just have to wait until Genext 2...which im loving XD
